Old-school Not Dead, or Producing Vintage Glamour Images

May 25th, 2010 by Michael

Creating vintage glamour images is fun as well as work of art as it requires a good understanding of photography as an art, posing techniques, lighting, as well as the knowledge of the good old golden days on the part of the photographer. Shooting vintage glamour image is fun because it makes the subject look as if it was a star of the past golden age or a pin-up model while being dramatic with a lot of contrast. For a glamour photographer it should be quite doable to make an old-school picture using some thoughtful lighting, posing and accessories.

Lighting is of utmost importance here as creating an image is all about manipulating light. Glamour Images that reproduce the very glorious vintage style should be taken in a studio, for the objective can only be completed with complex lighting from various angles. In order to achieve that “shadow under the nose” kind of lighting conditions, you’d have to use some strong source with powerful key light cast at a sharp angle – as if your model were in a spotlight. Additionally, you would require two weaker fill lights focused on the model. The other light needed is the backlight to separate the model from the background.

Obviously, colors mean a lot for Glamorous Photography, so monochrome should be perfect for creating the old-school impression and well the eyes of retro-fans with tears of delight. Moreover, the focus should be on contrast, and fill lights need to shine at one third the key light intensity to show the contours of the face.

Posing is critical for producing vintage beauty pictures, for back then the models wouldn’t normally look straight into the lens; to make it look old-school, the main subject should glance somewhat sideways, preferably with an enigmatic facial expression. In vintage glamour images it is the dramatic touch that counts, not the appearances. Reduce the amount of glamour in the entourage; I mean it – in vintage glamour photography the model is central persona and the carrier of all that glamorous atmosphere, not her wardrobe or surroundings. For black and white mode, try to go for monochromatic attire, as it will increase the contrast. Avoid too many colors, because lighting will most certainly wash them away, and go for matte make up, not the glossy type.

Controlling Depths Of Field In Glamour Images

May 19th, 2010 by Michael

Depth of field is one of photography’s pure basic, and having harnessed its full potential you will be able to create visually impeccable, artistic and truly delivering captions. Manipulating the aperture is especially useful for resolving tricky compositional riddles that require focusing on some of the most appealing areas of the shot, making all the negative details to blur, thus removing any unnecessary visual flaws or simplifying the composition.

The technique of shallow depth of field is very useful when you are shooting on location, say a glamorous bikini shot on a beach, where you have lot of disturbances like the people at the beach or the ocean that may not be required on the image. If this should be the case, you can turn to the method of shallow depth of field and effectively use it to remove all distraction and give an impression of ethereal background, which will be out of focus and therefore allow the viewers to concentrate on the model.

Not only whole shooting on location with a lot of background disturbances, you can apply the shallow depth of field technique even while shooting Glamour Photographs in studios. When you widen the aperture and choose the right shutter speed, you can easily give an ethereal and dramatic touch to the background, leaving the main object sharp and intact. Actually, a blurry background can totally turn the tables on the picture’s atmosphere, making it completely different – especially if you worked on the background color earlier on to contrast with that on the foreground.

We have also seen quite a number of glamour images boasting not only a background out of focus, but also blurred areas on the foreground and the main subject. A number of beauty photographers prefer to focus on model’s eyes and facial expression, blurring some other exciting detail – like, say, her sexy garment; this is often done for extra glamorous effect. Such pictures increase the dramatic mood in Glamour Photography. We notice her charming features and eyes, just as her sexy garment. However, when we look towards her bra, it is out of focus and is an abstract, which creates curiosity. Using such method, glamour artists can evoke the strongest interest from the viewers, intriguing them and drawing their attention to glamour pictures.

Natural Light In Glamour Images

May 12th, 2010 by Michael

Though most of the Glamour Images are shot in studios, photographers can make great use of natural or ambient light in creation of excellent glamour images. Sun is the basic source that emits clear white natural light – and there is no possible alternative to this near-infinite stream of quality shining; however, Sun’s position on the welkin due to the time of day, atmospheric conditions and other factors can create a variety of effects you may exploit for artistic and unusual ambiance, impossible to recreate in studio conditions.

To begin with, a glamour photographer can work with three basic kinds of sunlight: in the early morning, in the bright of day and before dusk, or shortly after it.

The morning light vanishes fast, yet it is widely believed to be the best kind you can get – warm enough to preserve colors, diffused to avoid rough shadows, falling from sharp angle – simply perfect. The morning light is cast rather sharply, almost horizontally against the earth surface, so the lighting comes from the side, subtle and dispersed; it is quite sensual and glamorous a light, so no wonder beauty artists love it.

Evening light is almost the same as early morning light that we get from the Sun, however, early morning light is clearer than the evening light because the day’s activity stir up dust in the atmosphere and there is some smog as well in evening light. Additionally, it often happens that during a cool evening which succeeded a warm day, it becomes misty and hazed.

In the afternoon or at midday you can have some more focused light from the sun, with lower color temperature. At this time of day, shadows shorten and the color temperature falls – such conditions are not very suitable for Glamorous Photography, apparently. The contrast between light and shadow becomes extreme due to focused light falling on the model, and most cameras cannot cope with it, losing details. However, you can still make some use from it and make highly contrasting pictures which combine highlights and shadows in extremis.

Consequently, you can always cope with almost any natural lighting conditions, provided you have skill and imagination – then your efforts will be rewarded with some fabulous glamour photographs. Beauty photography is an art, and natural light only helps to unveil another side to it – very romantic and sensual, just as our sun-lit world.

Lingerie In Glamour Images

May 5th, 2010 by Michael

Beauty Photography is expanding fast due to being popular and in high demand, and so is the lingerie photography – for the sake of making money and satisfying the numerous audience. Sexy garment is just as much an attribute of glamour images as a pretty girl on the picture – this association has become very strong in the minds of the viewers. Most of the glamour images are shot with the model in lingerie showing off her skin. This is exactly why such models earn so much working for enterprises like Victoria’s Secret.

Glamour Photos with lingerie come from both studios and open locations, demanding much inventiveness from an artist. By no means does it require pornography or explicit sexuality – I’d rather say you need some aesthetic touch and sensuality. The essence of such images should be promoting or selling the brand or lingerie in hand and not the model. Being a good photographer, you will need to exactly know what is required from this particular shot and what your priority is. Your client may want the image to show simple the strap of the bra, or the lace, or the whole model with the lingerie on, and at times, you may be required to create a feeling of romance or excitement via the glamour image that you create, therefore, such things should be considered while shooting lingerie images.

The style is growing, so you have to keep up in order to stay up-to-date: learn from already established works featuring lingerie pictures and become professional. There are plenty of glamour images for you to perceive that are exposed in advertising – e.g. the already mentioned Victoria’s Secret. Models like Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima earn much by representing famous brands, and their glamour images featuring lingerie are truly appealing and sensual. Although being partially nude on some of them, they manage to bring some romantic and touching atmosphere onto those glamour pictures. The shots in such glamour images showing off the lingerie brand are shot with so good lighting and such a good composure that you as an aspiring glamour image photographer can always learn new things, like lighting, pose, composition, and the feeling.
